Fun Fact of the Day: April 19, 2012

Found in the Pacific, the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the world’s oceans. The trench is 1,580 miles long and only 43 miles wide, with a deepest point between 6.78 miles and 6.85 miles. However, because the Earth is not a perfect sphere, the bottom of the trench is not, in fact, the part of the seafloor closest to the center of the Earth—parts of the Arctic Ocean are at least 8.1 miles closer.
