Experiment: Sinking Cork

You’ll need:

  • One cork
  • A bowl of water
  • A large glass

What to do:

  1. Float the cork in the bowl of water.
  2. Without touching the cork, turn the glass upside down and lower it into the water over the cork.

How it works:

If you did the experiment correctly, the cork should have sunk with the glass (though remaining dry) as it lowered into the water. This is because the water level in the glass is lowered by the compressed air, and thus the water level of the bowl rises.
